The American political landscape of the 1930s has almost universally been characterized by historians as an era dominated by New Deal liberalism. Consequently, many historians have come to conclude that Democrats, chiefly Franklin Roosevelt, could have acted more proactively in bringing about more authentically socialistic governmental reforms. While it is certainly true that Democrats as a whole enjoyed an unparalleled level of public support, an astute political observer will note that much of the public support for the Democratic party was contingent upon the party never truly embracing a socialistic platform that would genuinely threaten the capitalistic structure.

Nowhere in the nation was this fine line of political balancing act more apparent than in the 1934 California Gubernatorial campaign, which featured the dyed in the wool Socialist, Upton Sinclair, running on the Democratic ticket. Given the opportunity to embrace a bold and expansive economic plan for the state, which was only thinly veiled in its socialistic intentions, the voters soundly rejected Sinclair's utopian vision. By examining this unique campaign one can gain a truer appreciation for the American political landscape of the 1930's and more fully understand the genuine limitations of New Deal liberalism.
