Previous research has established the centrality of communication in safe sex promotion and HIV/AIDS prevention. The intention to use protection to prevent heterosexual transmission of diseases depends on effective communication to translate into behavior. Since heterosexual women need compliance from the male partners to use male condoms, communication is integral to women's condom use behaviors. In China, condom use rates are particularly low.

An interaction health intervention targeting condom use cognitions was conducted in small groups of four to eight participants. A total of 101 female Chinese students in a Shanghai university participated in the intervention and completed the data collection processes. Participants' knowledge, attitude, risk, self-efficacy, and intention were assessed immediately before and after the intervention. Qualitative data were collected in two parts using open-ended responses from the participants and a reflexive journal by the researcher.

Statistical analyses supported the hypotheses that the intervention would effectively enhance Chinese women's knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, and intention regarding condom use communication. Regression analysis showed that the model linking behavioral cognitions to intention adequately explained the data. Sexual experience, attitude, and self-efficacy significantly contributed to intention to talk about condom use. The sexually inexperienced reported a strong intention to talk about sex. Having a positive attitude and strong self-efficacy contributed to intention. Risk did not add significantly to the model.

Qualitative analyses of the open-ended responses and the reflexive journal led to some significant discoveries as well. Rules of interaction were identified from the women's accounts of their own experiences and perceptions. The qualitative data overall center on facing the competing expectations and values that together define the unique social and cultural realities for the young Chinese women as they seek to negotiate their own sexual experience.

Using the mixed methods approach, the quantitative and qualitative data in this study enhanced each other. Confirmatory and exploratory inquiries combined to create a more complete understanding of the phenomenon. Future research needs to continue examining Chinese women's sexual experience in the context of safe sex promotion.
