In sum, the present thesis advances our understanding of how one forms reference when evaluating outcomes that are spread over time. The findings of the present research have potentially important implications for improving happiness.

This thesis addresses the question of whether people will feel happier overall about a peak sequence, in which case they occasionally experience an outcome that is much better than what they typically experience, or about a valley sequence, in which case they occasionally experience an outcome that is much worse than what they typically experience, holding constant the total objective value of the outcomes in each sequence. Overall happiness from a sequence simply means an objective integration, such as the average, of happiness from each outcome in that sequence. The answer to the question critically depends on the reference one uses in evaluating the outcomes in the sequence.

A general proposition of this thesis is that the reference one uses depends on whether one is familiar or unfamiliar with the distribution of the values of outcomes in that sequence. If one is familiar with the distribution, the highest- and lowest-valued outcomes in the distribution serve as the reference. If one is unfamiliar with the distribution, the first outcome initially serves as the reference, but gradually the reference shifts to the highest- and lowest-valued outcomes; the shift of reference takes longer if the first outcome is the baseline (most frequently occurring) outcome in the sequence than if it is not, and if one receives the first outcome many times before encountering the first extreme outcome (peak or valley) than if one receives the first outcome few times.

According to the general proposition, the valley sequence will generate greater overall happiness than the peak sequence when one is familiar with the distribution, but the opposite may be true when one is unfamiliar with the distribution. Several hypotheses are derived from the proposition and tested in five studies. The results confirm the hypotheses and support the proposition.

The present research reconciles adaptation-level theory and range-frequency theory and to some extent synthesizes the two. On the one hand, adaptation-level theory does not acknowledge the impact of the highest- and lowest-valued outcomes on one's evaluation even when one is highly familiar with the distribution. On the other hand, range-frequency theory does not realize that when one is unfamiliar with the distribution, the extreme outcomes do not immediately but gradually serve as the reference.
