The research questions addressed in this study were whether there were correlations between servant leadership and gender, age, and locus of control. The research also evaluated whether there is a relationship between servant leadership and reelection to a leadership position.

The study built upon existing research that suggests servant leadership may be related to age, gender, and an internal locus of control, tested those relationships in a population of student leaders at a culinary college and tested whether servant leadership was preferred by followers. Because servant leadership is associated with moral integrity, these findings will be of interest not only to social scientists interested in leadership studies, but also to corporate and educational leaders who seek to improve organizational effectiveness, reduce corruption, and foster a climate of honesty and integrity.

The Culinary Institute of America provided an ideal situation to study reelection, because student group leaders are elected every few weeks. That scenario would be difficult to duplicate in a normal organizational setting. A questionnaire was distributed to the students, aimed at those who had been elected group leaders. In addition to administrative questions the instrument included Wong and Page's Servant Leadership Profile and Valecha and Ostrom's Locus of Control Inventory. Students' reelection histories served as the measure of follower preference.

Cronbach's Alpha indicated a high correlation between individual factors of servant leadership. Analysis of variance and regression showed no correlation between gender and only modest correlation with age and locus of control. These findings suggest that other factors, such as spirituality, learned behavior, or birth order might be useful variables for further research. No significant relationship was found between servant leadership and reelection success.

The development of morally-grounded, effective leaders has the potential to contribute to a climate of excellence and honesty, which in turn makes society more fair-minded and accessible. This research contributes to that end, and thus helps to advance positive social change.
