Thesis (Ed.D.)--Cardinal Stritch University, 2007.
Childhood obesity in the United States has increased to epidemic proportions over the last several years. Inappropriate diets and sedentary lifestyles in children are considered primary contributors to this increase in obesity. Parents are the main influencing force of dietary and activity behaviors of young children. This study examined nutrition, physical activity, and lifestyle and income patterns of 200 families with children ages 4-10 years who reside in a middle-class city in Brown County, Wisconsin. Two hundred mothers completed the Education for Healthy Kids Survey while the clinic specialist obtained the child's Body Mass Index (BMI). The mother's survey results and child's BMI were correlated using descriptive statistics and non-parametric test or tests appropriate for ordinal data (chi-square, Spearman's rho correlation, Kendall Tau b) were used throughout the analysis to determine the differences or relationships among the variables of interest (BMI and other behavioral measures). The study found significant differences in the relationship between two of the research variables. First, as the hours the mother indicated their child of watching TV increased so did the child's BMI percentile. Second, the more times a week that the mother indicated that the family dined out the higher the child's BMI percentile. The overall results indicate those family members in middle-income households practice food and activity behaviors contributing to child obesity and would benefit from customized nutrition and health interventions.Subjects--Topical Terms:
