Street vending is often seen as a problem by decision makers, store owners, planners and designers that tend to associate this phenomena with notions of congestion and disorder. In the last decades redevelopment projects in New York City have systematically displaced vendors from various locations in order to revitalize the streets. The elimination of vendors, however, has often been followed by a reduction in the level of pedestrian activities and the consequent reduction of the street life. This study investigates the influence of street vending on the functioning of the street in order to understand how vendors are functionally and spatially incorporated in the street space. Behavior observation techniques were used to examine and compare two distinct forms of vending activity and their influence on pedestrian circulation, access opportunities, incidents of friction and social interactions. Contributions and constraints brought by vendors were identified with the hope to illuminate more inclusive policies and the development of projects that successfully incorporate street vending activity in street spaces.
