Given the relatively swift changes in the gender composition of university faculties and societal roles for women, how do women in academia view their universities? How do female academics view the academic profession for themselves and for other women? To investigate these questions, I addressed in this study the professional careers of female academics in higher education. Specifically, I focused the study on the individual career histories of female professors at public universities that completed undergraduate and graduate university degrees in the sciences. With these histories, I made comparisons of these professors' perceptions of their professional lives. I then contrasted the different experiences across disciplines, levels of professional seniority, and nationality.

I used a qualitative approach with this study to draw out the perceptions and experiences of individuals. The theoretical framework I conceptualized for the initiation of the study includes Critical Theory and Feminist Theories. Also, since my data was drawn from individual women, I used Feminist Standpoint Theory to support beginning my work from the perspectives of the researched. I interviewed 26 female faculty members from public universities in Mexico and the United States. I also collected demographic data on the universities and countries involved and I used oral history research methods.

The study yielded data around four areas of professional life: research, funding, promotions, and experiences of gender. Academics in Mexico and the United States shared generally similar research goals and similar funding challenges, despite differences in the structure of the public universities in each country. Also, academics in both countries tended to consider tenure as but one of the many promotion hurdles. Notably, the female academics most frequently pointed to their experiences in roles of power and leadership as those with the most experiences of gender awareness and gender bias by colleagues. Findings indicated that changes in public universities in both countries particularly with regard to gender composition, as well as the transformation of public universities due to other factors such as globalization, competition with private universities, and new funding challenges affect women faculty's professional experiences.
