This dissertation examines how educational outcomes of elementary school-aged children are affected by having a mother enter prison. I examine the effect of maternal imprisonment on children's standardized test scores as well as on retention rates. I define the effect of maternal imprisonment as the change in test scores and retention rates relative to the mother's prison entry between children whose mothers enter prison and children in a comparison group. For the test score study, I use children whose mothers enter jail only once for 3 days or less during the 8.5 year sampling period as the comparison group. For the retention rate study, I construct a comparison group using propensity score matching on children whose mothers enter jail only once for 7 days or less during the same sampling period. I find that the overall poor academic performances of elementary school-aged children with imprisoned mothers are not direct results of their mother's incarceration. Children do not experience a drop in test scores or increase in retention rates following the mother's prison entry compared to their counterparts. These results are robust to different comparison groups as well as to different levels of maternal contact prior to the mother's incarceration.
