Thesis (Ph.D.)--Walden University, 2006.
The purpose of this ex post facto study was to investigate child molestation tendencies and antisocial behavior as factors that may influence the arrest histories of 24-to-70-year-old adult males. A convenience sample of 159 participants using private records already stripped of identifiers was examined. This study employed two 3-way factorial analyses of variance to investigate the influence of the age, antisocial, and child molestation independent variables on the dependent variables total number of arrests and number of sex-related arrests. The results did not yield statistically significant main effects or interaction between the dependent and independent variables (i.e., less than 3%), and demonstrated that the validity and reliability of the Sexual Adjustment Inventory (SAI) subscales for predictive purposes was not supported. This study exemplifies the vital importance of normative sampling when constructing actuarials often used in classification systems, and in the construction of sex-offender typologies listed in peer reviewed literature. It also has meaningful implications regarding civil commitment decisions and management of sexual offenders in the community. Both are grounded in the assessment of offender likeliness to reoffend using static factors (e.g., criminal history, official records) and dynamic factors (e.g., deviant sexual arousal) that are measured by valid sex offender-specific inventories. Significant predictive validity and reliability of sex offender inventories such as the SAI are critical and deserve adequate attention.
