Thesis (Ph.D.)--Washington State University, 1988.
The problem was to determine the extent to which theories of interorganizational relations (IOR) can be used to explain relations among selected information organizations in a research university. A model which included perspectives from exchange theory, dependency theory, uncertainty theory, and comparative theory was hypothesized. A secondary problem was to use the elements of the model to identify the structure underlying IOR in the two universities studied and to characterize the pairwise relations of the 24 dyads studied.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The problem was to determine the extent to which theories of interorganizational relations (IOR) can be used to explain relations among selected information organizations in a research university. A model which included perspectives from exchange theory, dependency theory, uncertainty theory, and comparative theory was hypothesized. A secondary problem was to use the elements of the model to identify the structure underlying IOR in the two universities studied and to characterize the pairwise relations of the 24 dyads studied.

A questionnaire was developed and used to collect data from 274 employees in the media centers, libraries, computer centers, and radio-TV services of two research universities. A multi-level framework of analysis was developed. The hypothesized model was tested by means of mixed level multiple regression and commonality analysis using a data set containing 822 cases. The structure underlying IOR in the two universities was identified using hierarchical cluster analysis. The pairwise relations of the 24 dyads were characterized using discriminant analysis and ANOVA.

The hypothesized model was found to explain as much as 63% of the variability in observed IOR. Various types of IOR (contact, resource exchange, joint activity, cooperation, conflict) were explained differently, but each theoretical perspective contributed significantly to the explanatory power of the model. Specific hypotheses from each theoretical perspective about the direction of the relationship between IOR and its determinants were supported. The structure underlying IOR was different in each university. There were common elements which described the differences in relations between specific pairs of organizations.

It was concluded that the hypothesized model was useful in explaining IOR across differing universities, dyads, and organizations. It was demonstrated that an existing body of theory about IOR is applicable to the higher education environment. It was also concluded that the multi-level framework of analysis was useful as a technique for describing IOR at multiple levels.
