The 1940--1941 bombing raids on London were a symbolic and social test of Britain's unity. Witnesses in London during the Blitz thus had a strong sense of their own historical importance. They felt it was imperative that they record the details of their personal lives and their perceptions of the national crisis in Britain. In their diaries and memoirs, civilians remapped London, transforming it from a city split between the consumer delights of the West End and the poverty and degradation of the East End into an imagined urban community unified by the democratic power of witnessing.

But underneath the democratic ideals, the Blitz increased the material struggles among social classes, ethnicities, genders and the geographical boroughs of London, as each had access to varying levels of bureaucracy and food, shelter and safety. The institutions of the workplace, family and marriage came under increased public scrutiny and social pressures during the Blitz.

The year 1942 was the beginning of the social and political reinterpretation of the events of the Blitz as part of the search for an imagined social transformation to mirror the perceived changes in national political consciousness. The roots of the politicization of the Blitz lie in the political reinterpretation of the memories of Londoners, not in the experiences themselves.

Though narrowly focused on eight months in one city, this work is a popular history of the Second World War. A interpretative approach to the diaries and memoirs of a wide range of Londoners reveals how civilians thought about the war and their own importance to it, how the hardships and difficulties affected their daily lives, and how their experiences and thoughts combined in their memories to create a re-envisioned map of London during the Blitz. Linking the everyday lives of Londoners during the Blitz to the wider spheres of national politics emphasizes the importance of the individual to wider national history and identity and symbols.
