Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Berkeley, 1992.
Painters of the Kano House produced a significant number of multi-scenic narrative paintings in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The first such works came out of the workshop of Kano Motonobu, the painter given primary credit for establishing the foundations of Kano success. The research conducted for this dissertation suggests that Motonobu developed a distinctive mode of pictorial narration in response to patron needs and that it had a significant impact on the narrative works of his followers.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The dissertation is divided into six chapters. The first looks at the rhetorical nature of early painting histories and suggests that their reliability is limited. It takes a particularly critical look at the role played by the wa-kan (Japanese-Chinese) dichotomy in early Kano texts. The second chapter examines the career of Motonobu's father, Masanobu, to gain a better understanding of Motonobu's fundamental training. The third looks at Motonobu's relationship with the Tosa family and suggests that their impact on Motonobu's narrative painting was limited. Chapter Four analyzes the narrative structures of works by Motonobu and Tosa Mitsunobu. A comparison of their two approaches helps confirm conclusions drawn in the previous chapter. Chapter Five uses analyses of a selected group of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century pictorial narratives to suggest the types of models Motonobu's own works drew upon. The last chapter looks at Motonobu's legacy in pictorial narration through examination of various Kano illustrations of the Shuten doji story.
