Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Missouri - Columbia, 1992.
Throughout his career, Truman Capote used the materials of his life in a highly specialized way as the subject matter of his writing. Capote absorbed experience in an extremely intense manner and then recreated it in both his fiction and his nonfiction, employing highly specialized techniques to manipulate and distance the material and so to disguise its nature. From Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948) to In Cold Blood (1966), Capote's work displayed both technical innovation and thematic significance, but after the great success of In Cold Blood, Capote's ability to produce significant work declined. This study argues that the methods of absorption and creation that Capote relied on intersected with the terrible materials of In Cold Blood in a way that produced catastrophic results.Subjects--Topical Terms:
