Play, poetic cognition, and the Delphi seminar.
Robison, Rhonda Dean.
Play, poetic cognition, and the Delphi seminar.
- 207 p.
Adviser: Jerry L. McGuire.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Louisiana at Lafayette, 2006.
Sigmund Freud associated poet's work with child's play. D. W. Winnicott discovered the roots of play in the transitional space between mother and child, when the child adopts a transitional object and/or phenomenon as a mother-substitute during the weaning process. Studies in cognitive science suggest that the human brain is hardwired for play. This dissertation makes correlations between poetics, psychoanalytic principles, and cognitive science to arrive at a theory of poetics and a demonstration of poetic cognition as a critical model of thought that highlights the importance of play in developing creative thinking skills.

The Delphi seminar, a psychoanalytically-based literature course developed by Norman Holland and Murray Schwartz, offers a play-space for poetic cognition. The seminar, along with Holland's discussion of holistic analysis and his DEFT'ing model of cognition are employed both in discussion and through examples of my and other group member's writings and subsequent analyses of our work. Writing exercises that I have developed as facilitator of numerous Delphi seminars expand the seminar's original format, which is centered around free-associative responses written to selected topics.

A focus on "play" is included as a multi-function of the dissertation: play is discussed theoretically, the writing exercises are designed as games, and the dissertation's framework is structured around the writing exercises along with a discussion of games that led to important theoretical insights in psychoanalysis.

The creative section of the dissertation provides another level of multi-function in its focus on poetry as play. The poems and Delphi response excerpts included in this section focus on dream, association, and internal psychological states. Another aspect of the dissertation as a multi-functioning text is included in "poetic" photographs that I have composed and interspersed throughout the creative section and that serve as associations to the poetic language.
