Ghana has a high rate of unemployment, especially for students with only a high school diploma. Despite efforts to reduce unemployment, there is a lack of effective research on what specific entry-level job skills local employers in Ghana's Madina and Accra area need and whether high school graduates possess these skills. The purpose of this study was to help school officials and business leaders address this school to job transition. Research questions focused on local business employers' entry level job needs and whether or not job applicants possessed these basic skills. The study's research design was a descriptive non-experimental survey. Sixty-four companies were surveyed. Chi-square test and Spearman rho rank order correlation were used to analyze data. Findings indicated that graduates possessed only 14 of the 57 job skills employers identified. Specifically, leadership, critical thinking, and computer, reading, writing, and math skills were the least possessed skills of the graduates. Business leaders and educators need to evaluate these findings and find collective ways to improve graduates' basics skills through additional educational resources and updated curricula. With business and high school leaders cooperating, these actions will help develop a stronger local workforce and stimulate business growth. Society and Ghana will benefit over time as prospects for investments in the local business community grow, opportunities for youth expand, and graduates develop self-esteem and a sense of acceptance within the community.Subjects--Topical Terms:
