The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between district size, socioeconomic status, actual levy percentages, and their predictive influence on the 2003 Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) results for 4th and 7th grade students in Reading and Mathematics. The sample was 82 second-class school districts in Washington state with enrollments between 500-2,000 students.

The study investigated the following questions: (a) what is the relationship between student achievement and district enrollment size, (b) what is the relationship between student achievement and the socioeconomic status of students in the districts, (c) what is the relationship between academic achievement and Washington state districts financial resources allocation---as measured by actual levy percentages, and (d) which of these variables is the most influential predictor of student achievement: district size, socioeconomic status, and or actual levy percentages?

A correlation design was utilized to explore the relationships between the predictor and criterion variables. Multiple linear regression procedures with simultaneous entry of the variables were used. Criterion variables were the reading and mathematics results for 4th and 7th grade students on the 2003 Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL).

No statistically significant correlations were noted between student achievement and district size. Socioeconomic status (free and reduced meal rate percentages) and student outcomes were highly negatively correlated and statistically significant at the .01 alpha levels. Actual levy percentages and student outcomes were significantly correlated at the .01 alpha levels and in the positive direction.

Multiple regression analysis revealed socioeconomic status as the best predictor of student outcomes. Actual levy percentages contributed negligible amounts of proportional variance to student scores. Due to non-significant correlations, district size was not utilized as a predictor variable with the regression analysis. This study encourages further investigations utilizing other predictor variables that can potentially mitigate the strong influence of socioeconomic status on student outcomes.
