Thesis (M.A.)--University of Louisville, 2001.
This thesis examines the dialectics of power between the dictator and his subordinate through an analysis of the dialogues in El senor presidente (1946), Yo, el Supremo (1974) and El gran elector (1993). Applying the theories of Kier Elam and Michel Foucault, among other critics, we find that deception and evasion are two principal tools used by the dictator and his right-hand man to serve their purposes. These novels represent three different countries (Guatemala, Paraguay and Mexico) and three distinct historical periods.

In Miguel Angel Asturias' El senor presidente, the power relation between the president and Cara de Angel is functional, but eventually deteriorates with prejudicial consequences for the subordinate, whereas in Augusto Roa Bastos' Yo, el Supremo, el Supremo and Patino become contenders in a struggle for power, and in Ignacio Solares' El gran elector, there exists mutual support between the president and Dominguez.
