In both the Judeo-Christian and the Paraguayan Guarani traditions, the role of the Word is fundamental. In these traditions, the Word is the Alpha and Omega of all things created and constitutes the essence of the human being. In addition, the Word is the source of creation and destruction and of power over man's life, property, and governmental institutions. These ideas about the Word have been influential in the works of theoreticians such as Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan, and writers such as the Paraguayan Augusto Roa Bastos.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a This dissertation analyzes the use of the Word--oral and written--as an instrument of creation and destruction in I, the Supreme (1974) by Augusto Roa Bastos. In I, the Supreme, it is observed how the synthesis of the Judeo-Christian and Guarani traditions is the primal force behind the dictator-protagonist that defines both the characters and the novel's composition. Among the relevant elements of the creation/destruction of the semantic and discursive possibilities of the Word are the following: the origins and primacy of the oral Word versus the written Word, the effects of writing on memory, the power of writing, and the productivity of the Word.
520 $a The study of these elements leads to a deeper understanding of the different levels of the novel without disregarding its historical context and its style. Furthermore, this dissertation integrates the historical aspect of the novel with its ideological, psychological and mythical components. This integration results in a more holistic approach to the reading of the text and a better understanding of the characteristics of the Paraguayan peoples.
