The first chapter analyzes the "literary consciousness" in Yo el Supremo (1974), that is, the discourse that the central narrative consciousness (that of the main character Francia) delivers on literature and writing. To demonstrate this point, I have used various quotations from the novel, as well as the studies and opinions of pertinent critics. The chapter concludes with the idea that the Protagonist Francia is an imaginative recreation of the historrical 19th century Paraguayan dictator of the same surname, and also with the idea that the act and nature of writing constitute one of the central themes of the novel.Subjects--Topical Terms:

It analyzes the discourse that the central consciousness delivers on not only the history of 19th century Paraguay--and, by extension, that of Latin America--, but also on its own history (or, rather, story). The protagonist Francia, while serving as the historical consciousness of the people he ruled for a time, also tries to impose his own personal vision of history.
