Examining and transcending the interiority of the self is among the distinguishable themes of the mythic experience in literature. The archetypal approaches of Richard E. Hughes provide a paradigm for the application of archetypal criticism, more specifically, the Dionysos archetype. Hughes's Jungian approach to the Dionysos myth in literature illustrates the personification of the Dionysian quest with "stages" that are reminiscent of Joseph Campbell's monomyth. They pave the way to self-discovery and a newfound altered consciousness. Thus, the culmination of the Dionysian journey consists of either one of the two polarized finales---spiritual destruction or wholeness (personal transcendence). Alberto Moravia's Boredom and Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita illustrate Dionysian self-destruction, whereas Alfred Bashevis Singer's The Penitent and Marguerite Duras's The Lover illustrate the antithesis---spiritual wholeness.
