This longitudinal study investigated the relationship between maternal depression in infancy and child socio-emotional adjustment at age 3½. Maternal depressive symptoms at age 12-months were expected to be negatively associated with concurrent maternal responsiveness and with child socio-emotional adjustment when the child was 3½-years-old. Maternal responsiveness was hypothesized to mediate this relationship. Sixty four mothers of 12-month-old infants filled out the CES-D to measure maternal depression. Maternal responsiveness was measured using observational scales adapted from the NHCID Study of Early Child Care. Child adjustment was measured by maternal report on the CBCL at age 3½ years. Although the mediational hypothesis was not supported, different patterns emerged for boys and girls. In girls, maternal depression predicted low maternal responsiveness and high externalizing and aggressive behavior problems. In boys, high maternal depressive symptoms were not associated with maternal responsiveness but did predict somatic problems.Subjects--Topical Terms:
