Thesis (M.M.P.)--University of Delaware, 2007.
Some mercury is found in almost all seafood. There is concern over the amount of mercury ingested by humans through the consumption of seafood. Humans exposed to mercury can experience adverse health effects such as impaired neurological development. In 2004, in response to this concern, the FDA and the EPA jointly issued a health advisory titled "What You Need to Know About Mercury in Fish and Shellfish." Recognizing the health benefits of eating seafood, the advisory recommended eating at least two seafood meals per week. However, because of the potential for impairment neurological growth, the advisory recommends children and women of child bearing age should not consume seafood more then twice a week. A survey was conducted to determine consumer response to this advisory. It was found that the majority of the population is eating seafood and is within the upper limits of the recommendations. Although 75% of respondents were aware there is an advisory, less then 20% of respondents showed a strong understanding of the advisory. The advisory will cause a change in only 13% of respondents' consumption habits. Those who do change are slightly more likely to make an incorrect change. These results suggest, due to the potential for adverse health effects, a review of this policy is in order.
