Daniel, Denise.
University and group cohesion in an online support group.
- 91 p.

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Regent University, 2007.
As increasing numbers of Americans use the Internet, their primary purpose is to obtain health care information and support. Yet, little research has been done that examines the nature and efficacy of online support groups. This study examined the difference in Yalom's group therapeutic factors of cohesion and universality between traditional face-to-face groups and online, synchronous, text-based support groups. Forty graduate students participated in the study that used a quasi-experimental/qualitative design. Subjects were self-selected and then assigned to either a 10-week traditional or an online group. The cohesion subscale of the Group Environment Scale-Expectations (GES-E) was administered pre-group to measure differences in expectations of cohesion and found there were no significant differences in the expectation of group cohesion. The GES-Realistic Scale and the Therapeutic Factors Inventory were administered post-group and found no significant differences in cohesion and universality between the online and traditional groups. A qualitative/quantitative questionnaire was also administered post-group and found no significant differences in cohesion and universality between the online and traditional groups.Subjects--Topical Terms:
