This descriptive research evaluated gastric bypass patient nutrition knowledge using 421 anonymous, online surveys. Demographics, medical background, knowledge background, and nutrition knowledge data were collected. Nutrition knowledge covered malnutrition prevention, dumping syndrome/noncompliant eating behaviors, anemia, and bone health. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, frequency and percentages, and ANOVAs. The average nutrition care knowledge score was 63% and long-term outcomes knowledge was 50.8%. Average knowledge scores were higher as education and time-since-surgery increased. Distal gastric bypass patients knew less than proximal patients. Conclusion: gastric bypass patients are underinformed about nutrition care principles needed to maintain health and weight loss after surgery. Widespread nutrition care knowledge assessment and reassessment like diabetes could impact knowledge, long-term outcomes, and cost of care.
