Discussion. Significant changes in time to peak GRF, time to peak of maximum knee flexion, muscle activation and temporal patterning may suggest a kinematic difference in landing form in a fatigued state.

Purpose. To examine the effects of fatigue on vertical ground reaction forces (GRF), selected lower extremity EMG activity, and knee kinematics during a two-legged landing from a two-legged targeted vertical jump.

Background. Fatigue is a factor that predisposes athletes to injury through reduction in muscle strength, a decrease in dynamic stability, and high ground reaction forces when landing. Any modification in muscle performance due to fatigue may compromise its ability to protect the body from injury. Landing has been shown to cause 5 times the number of injuries of the lower limb when compared to the take-off phase. Landing technique and dissipation of ground reaction force during a fatigued state is an important factor in prevention of injury.

Methodology. 20 male subjects, ages 18 to 30 were exposed to two treatments (no fatigue, and fatigue). Pre and post treatment data was collected during landing from a targeted vertical jump. The vertical ground reaction forces (GRF's) were sampled from an AMTI force plate. Muscular activity of the gastrocnemius, rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and biceps femoris was recorded with use of Noraxon electromyography (EMG). Maximum knee flexion was recorded with use of the NorAngle electrogoniometer.

Design. Separate 2 x 2 MANOVA's (condition x time) were used for analysis of the muscular activity, ground reaction force data, maximum knee flexion, and time to peak knee flexion. Post hoc tests consisted of appropriate univariate t-tests and Bonferroni adjustments. The alpha level for all statistical analysis was set a priori at p= 0.05.

Results. No significant changes were observed in integrated, average, or peak vertical GRF's; time to peak, average, and integrated EMG activity; or maximum knee flexion while in a fatigued state. Significant changes were found in peak amplitude of the rectus femoris, biceps femoris, and gastrocnemius; time to peak GRF; and time to peak for maximum knee flexion. The gastrocnemius activated earlier during the fatigued condition.
