Thesis (M.A.)--Southern Methodist University, 2006.
Following Julius Caesar's Gallic campaigns in the 50s BCE, the area of Western Europe then known as Gallia Comata came under the jurisdiction of Rome. Scholars have often viewed the process of cultural change in Gallia as the native Celtic peoples Romanizing (i.e., discarding their own worldviews and ideologies for those of Rome). My thesis seeks to demonstrate the continuity of Gallic identity from the Hannibalic Wars of the third century BCE through to the late imperial period, by examining case studies dealing with statecraft, creative expression and cult. I shall examine how Gallic nations selectively borrowed and adapted to Roman techniques, opportunities and modes of expression, not necessarily as a conscious surrendering of identity nor as a means to mollify Rome, but rather as part of a tradition of self-interest and opportunism, rooted in Celtic warring tribal societies of the Bronze Age.
