Thesis (Ph.D.)--Union Institute and University, 2006.
Using methodology developed by Clark Moustakas (1990), this study presents the essences, experiences and beliefs of ten American Zen practitioners, including the author, explicated as a vision of a uniquely evolving American form of Zen. The American Zen practiced by these "co-researchers" is characterized by an equality of participation by both men and women, by a central focus on zazen or seated meditation, a lack of obsession with the concept of "Buddhist enlightenment," and a focus on personal responsibility that may or may not include a formal relationship as the student of a Zen teacher, but does include a focus on applying the ideas of Zen in everyday life, of developing compassion and acceptance in post-modern America.

The findings of the study are presented in the form of eight themes drawn from the expanse of heuristic data collected, developed and refined. These themes along with Zen poems that evolved from the data and examination of co-researcher demographic data are compared with the work of Coleman (2001) to provide a more complete picture of the unique evolving nature of American Zen. Implications of the study suggest that this model of heuristic study could usefully be applied in several diverse regions of America to provide a more in-depth analysis, and that Coleman's quantitative approach could be expanded by means of Buddhist Internet sites to include larger numbers of American Zenists.
