This study of Francis of Assisi involves the application of modern psychological understanding to a historical person. While most such studies have sought a comprehensive personality profile this work focuses on one specific aspect of personality, the imagination, and seeks greater insight into the imaginatively inspired spiritual vision of St. Francis. For purposes of comparison a brief analysis of the imaginative works of two contemporaries of Francis, Bernard of Clairvaux and Aelred of Rielvaux, is given. Following this is a survey of modern views on the imagination and the approach of Object Relations Theory, or ORT, selected as a means to structure and analyze the writings of Francis. ORT, with its contention that the imaginative creation of an infant's world develops out of the earliest interactions between the infant and maternal caregiver, is used as the basis for highlighting the way Francis apparently formed his way of visualizing the reality around him and his relationship to it. Specific categories for analysis include experience, relationship, change, faith, and meaning. Through this study Francis is shown to have been influenced in the formulation of his imaginative works by his social environment, but he clearly uses the images available to him in a unique and creative manner to fashion a new perspective of reality that he was able to share in many aspects with others. While any study of a person eight hundred years in the grave is more dependent on what is plausible than what is determinable, this study finds numerous examples where Francis' writings display an adept use of imagination and even encourages or tutors others in that use in a manner that corresponds to an ORT perspective on tutoring the imagination.
