A review of literature outlines the civic need for general education focused on topics that explore the built community and the environment, topics typically reserved for courses specific to landscape architecture, planning, and architecture. This study was conducted with the intent to provide an educational framework for a general education course focused on the built community and environment. Three components of research were conducted and synthesized to create this product. First, a review of related courses and programs was conducted and analyzed. Second, an in-depth literature review of educational research and practice was completed and teaching methods evaluated. Third, qualitative research methods were employed to conduct interviews to gather original data. Results from the cumulative research are synthesized, providing an educational framework for a course of study. Results indicate that specific skills and knowledge need to be introduced through a framework of values and perspectives of place.
