This study explores adult students at the University of Central Missouri (UCM). The number of adults attending higher education has been increasing, however, there has been close to a 17% decrease within this population from 2001 to 2005 at UCM. This study focuses on the differences between undergraduate and graduate adult students, and the ways UCM can accommodate and support their college experience. This study randomly surveys 292 non-traditional UCM students. The research objectives of this project are threefold: (1) to better understand the motivators of adult students who return to college, (2) to examine the barriers that adult students face so that faculty can assist with their college success, and (3) to identify special needs and concerns held by adult students.
