Thesis (M.A.)--University of Houston-Clear Lake, 2008.
The visual element of color in academic discourse is typically considered in terms of its properties as a component of light, identity in pigment color systems or in its art historical contexts. Color is most often considered in its role as subservient to a larger iconographic program in works of art. Lacking in scholarship is discussion of the psychological effects of color, particularly in paintings, as significant contributors of meaningful expression. In order to contextualize this new approach, I establish the historical, creative and psychological contexts for color as a unique formal element. My thesis explores the psychological properties of color as a critical element in the expression of meaning and applies knowledge of the evolution of color theory to specific examples of artists who push beyond formal constructions and narrowly discursive narratives into areas where color becomes a vehicle of meaning.
