Thesis (M.S.)--Tufts University, 2008.
Every year, approximately five thousand patients suffering from laryngeal cancer, a form of cancer in the upper digestive tract, need to undergo the procedure of total laryngectomy, where the entire larynx is removed. The larynx is a crucial organ responsible for human speech production. The patients who undergo total laryngectomy thus have to depend on prosthesis or surgical procedures that give them the ability to communicate with people via speech. Artificial/electronic larynx is a battery powered hand held device used as prosthesis to enable speech communication with a vibration like sound. However, the quality of alaryngeal speech derived from using the artificial larynx is very mechanical and noisy. The number of cases involving patients who undergo total laryngectomy and then opt to use electronic larynx, is relatively small. The cost involved in performing detailed research and the fact that the number of people directly impacted by the research might not be large enough, results in the situation that significant effort has not been devoted in order to improve the quality of alaryngeal speech. Currently, our knowledge regarding how speech spectrum is affected by the vibration like noise induced by the artificial larynx, is not as in depth as desired. So, this research was undertaken in order to improve understanding regarding the enhancement of speech intelligibility of the artificial larynx with the intention of developing techniques to improve alaryngeal speech derived from the use of electronic larynx.
