Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Michigan, 2007.
This study comprises three essays exploring the dynamics of trading interactions between countries at differing stages of economic development. In the chapter "Trade and Migration in an Enlarged European Union: A Spatial Analysis," a new model incorporating features of both the new trade literature and the literature of economic geography is used to explore the consequences of European Union enlargement. The calibrated version of this model is shown to have predictive power and forecasts that aggregate trade between the previous EU-15 and eight new and potential new members should increase by approximately 4.8 percent of acceding country GDP in the five years following accession. The migration effects of further eastward enlargements are predicted to be somewhat more substantial that those resulting from the 2004 enlargement, with a predicted 1.4 million net migrants from new and potential new members to the previous EU-15. In "International Financial Volatility and Commodity Exports: Evidence from the Thai Agricultural Sector," I posit a model of risk-averse commodity exporters serving both domestic and foreign markets in order to assess the impact of real exchange rate volatility on exports. Using data on Thai production and export of five key agricultural commodities, I find that the data confirm the predictions of the model---higher exchange rate volatility leads to lower exports but no change in total production. This result is robust to the choice of any of four measures of real exchange rate volatility. The final essay, "Jump Down, Turn Around, Pick a Bale of...Poverty? U.S. Cotton Policy and Household Income in Cote d'Ivoire," examines the impact of U.S. cotton subsidies (as well as the structure of Ivoirian cotton markets themselves) on Ivoirian household incomes. I evaluate the effect of four likely long-run outcomes. The most generous of these---in which the U.S. completely dismantles its cotton subsidy program and the Ivoirian government fully liberalizes cotton markets---results in a 5 percent increase in aggregate household income. Taken together, these three essays improve our understanding of international trade and trade policy by providing evidence on three key policy-related questions.
