Thesis (M.A.)--Royal Roads University (Canada), 2008.
Research has demonstrated that the way people cope with stress when facing job loss affects their psychological, physical, and social well-being (Leana, Feldman, & Tan, 1998; Vinokur, Vuori, Schul, & Price, 2000). Through this project I explored how enhancing self-leadership by developing emotional intelligence competencies can offset the stress of job loss. I investigated how building resiliency and strengthening self-efficacy could facilitate the process of reemployment. This project aimed to maximise the effectiveness of the job loss interventions offered by members of the Employment Network Education and Training for Rehabilitation and Career Practitioners (ENET). Two focus groups of career practitioners explored how to foster self-leadership in the unemployed and whether fostering self-leadership increases the quality of reemployment. The findings from the qualitative research approach reveal the need to enhance self-leadership to build self-efficacy and resiliency; they corroborate the literature review, which shows the benefits of enhancing emotional intelligence competencies.
