Thesis (Ed.D.)--Fielding Graduate University, 2008.
This study of bridging paradigms was conducted using classical grounded theory methodology (Glaser, 1978, 1992, 1998, 2001, 2005; Glaser & Strauss, 1967). The classical grounded theory methodology is a systematic, inductive, and empirical methodology of generating theory from data. The goal of grounded theory is the discovery of a theory that explains, predicts, and provides applications for what is truly going on in the action scene.

The theory of bridging paradigms applies to contexts where individuals are moving from one paradigm to another. Although the majority of the data come from an online educational context, the study compared data from other contexts to add variation to the theory, thereby enhancing its relevance, with modification, to other substantive areas.

The research discovered that bridging paradigms is a basic social-psychological process of adaptation that one goes through when he or she is on the cutting edge of a new model or way of thinking. One embraces the new model yet also retreats from it in an iterative fashion as one learns more about him or herself and how the new model really works. One is imposed upon to uncover and confront his or her conscious and unconscious assumptions. One uses aspects of the original model to help him or her bridge or cross to the new paradigm. In the process, one experiences personal change, while at the same time having an impact on shaping the new model.
