Thesis (M.Arch.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2007.
This project began in response to some intriguing social ideas of 19th century Arts and Crafts theory, but has become a more rounded design investigation into the architectural legacy of the movement as the origin of architectures of resistance to placelessness. Arts and Crafts, as a set of concepts, encourages us to view design and architecture from the standpoint that they are material and invested with intellect and heart, skill and care, not merely spatial constructs. These architectures of resistance to placelessness and homogeneity are now identified through complimentary theories but new banners, such as vernacular architecture, tectonic expression, and haptic architecture. The aim of this thesis is to illustrate that architectural experience is intimately material, underscoring the significance of craft, ornament and material assembly to place making. Finesse and playfulness must be ready to endure weathering, salt and wear. Beauty is manifest as ornament, and articulation of the tectonic assembly, coming together to occupy space. The occupation of raw space by the whit and honesty of craft and natural processes underlie the making of architectures we can empathize with and, thereby, the creation of place.
