The Chinese higher educational system began to experience a variety of significant reforms in the 1990s. One reform was in the undergraduate curriculum, and its purpose was to change the previous utilitarian and narrow undergraduate curriculum aiming at personnel training to a more humane and student-centered one under the guidance of the Western-originated idea of general education. This curriculum reform indicated a significant breakthrough in Chinese higher education, because what was underlying the reform was a transformation of people's understandings regarding the aims of higher education.

This research was a case study on the undergraduate curriculum reform at Sichuan University---a typical comprehensive university in Southwest China---in order to gain detailed and in-depth understandings about administrators, faculty members, and students' views toward the curriculum reform. This research adopted both qualitative and quantitative methods. The research data were mainly collected through interviews, surveys, as well as document analysis.

Almost all the people involved in this study agreed that the curriculum reform represented progress from the old system. Findings revealed that the reform brought great benefit for the few undergraduates who had clear goals in mind and who knew what they were interested in. However, for the majority who were not clear about their goals and were less self-disciplined, the freedom brought by the reform made many students aimless in course selections and lost in all kinds of bad distractions. Consequently, it was necessary for Sichuan University to design a more structured general education curriculum that could provide guidance along with requirements for undergraduates. Findings also revealed that the poor quality of the available courses arose as a serious problem of the curriculum reform. Meanwhile, the administrative department at Sichuan University did not involve the efforts from the faculty members and students in the initiation and implementation of the reform, and many students complained that they did not have adequate information to know about the reform. It is worthwhile for future researchers to examine the general education reform from the perspective of the organizational structure and the decision making process. In addition, the study suggested that how to translate the Western idea of general education into the Chinese context theoretically and practically was a critical question for which most Chinese universities and scholars have not found a satisfactory answer yet.
