As a case study on an early twentieth century Chinese cotton manufacturing firm that eventually became known as "Yudahua Business Group," this research has two agendas. First, based on the history of Yudahua, it revisits China's early industrialization and searches for continuities in a seemingly fragmented picture. Second, it traces the organizational development of Yudahua, and situates its experience within the larger history of Chinese firms. In order to achieve these two goals, the narrative, organized chronologically to highlight the changes and continuities between different stages of development, is primarily focused on the business development of this industrial enterprise. At the same time, the interaction between the business and its social context is also stressed, to add a social history dimension to this business history study.

After tracing Yudahua's history from late Qing to the early PRC, the dissertation reaches the following conclusions. First, the much-derided "self-strengthening" enterprises of the late Qing period laid the foundation for China's early industrial development. Second, having inherited some positive contributions from the "self-strengthening" enterprises, the newly emerged industrial sector started to have a profound social impact during the warlord period (1916-27). Particularly, it contributed to urban development and shaped urban society. Third, despite the economic depression of the 1930s and the wartime crisis of the 1940s, China's industrial firms continued to expand during the Republican era. The crises did not necessarily diminish the strength of these young industrial enterprises. Instead, they redirected the institutional development of the firms. Gradually, big businesses like the Yudahua Business Group emerged with a complex Chandler-esque management structure. Finally, both China's new industrial sector and this particular industrial enterprise experienced some fundamental changes after the 1949 Revolution, but, contrary to conventional wisdom, there were also strong continuities. Some of the major changes, such as the development of a comprehensive welfare program and a controlled price policy, actually had their roots in the 1940s.
