Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, San Francisco Bay, 2008.
The present study focused on issues regarding the diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in Asian people. Many researchers have suggested that the diagnoses included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) should not be utilized universally without taking into account cultural aspects of the individual because cultural context is inevitably prominent in shaping the development of a person's personality. In order to promote more accurate and culturally fair diagnoses of BPD in Asian cultures, this study made comparisons between Eastern and Western presentations of BPD by analyzing dynamic dimensions of BPD (including emotional regulation and expression, identity issues, interpersonal relationships, defense mechanisms, cognitive operations, and behavioral regulation) and reviewing the Asian cultural worldview in relation to each of these BPD dynamic dimensions.

Currently there is low diagnostic prevalence of BPD in Asian cultures and few studies on the BPD phenomena using Asian populations exist. The existing information on BPD in different Asian cultures was carefully investigated to acquire more clinical information regarding BPD presentations in these cultures. The study also examined traditional Asian ways of conceptualizing personality from a historical perspective.

This study concluded that the straightforward application of BPD knowledge to Asians without any cultural modifications is clinically inadequate. After discussing the potential cultural discrepancies of each BPD dimension between Eastern and Western cultures and how cultural and historical factors impact BPD manifestations, general guidelines for diagnosing BPD in Asians were generated. The goal was to expand our knowledge of diagnosing and treating Asian BPD patients.
