Thesis (Ed.D.)--Texas A&M University - Kingsville, 2007.
Colleges and universities continually face problems and challenges of recruitment, retention, and quality issues for faculties and students. To address these concerns, higher education institutions are searching for ways to enhance the effectiveness of students and faculty. Emerging research studies (Nelson & Low, 2003; Pearman, 2002) suggest that Emotional Intelligence (EI) and personality factors are important constructs for faculty as well as students.

The current study focused on identifying and determining the EI skills and personality type factors impacting faculty performance and success in postsecondary education. Specifically, the study investigated the relationship, if any, of EI and personality type with faculty teaching in Taiwan.

The major purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between personality type and EI with a sample of Taiwanese faculty. In addition, data were analyzed to examine the differences in emotional intelligence between gender and age groups. Research participants included a sample of 100 faculty members from colleges and universities in Taiwan. Eighteen hypotheses were introduced and tested to explore the relationship between personality type and EI.

A quantitative approach was used to collect and analyze data. Two inventories, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Emotional Skills Assessment Process (ESAP) were utilized for data collection. A one-way ANOVA was applied to analyze the data. Salient factors evaluated were personality type, gender, and age. Dependent variables were six subscores from the ESAP.

The results of the study showed the relationships between emotional intelligence and personality type of faculty in Taiwan. Further analyses determined the relationship of personality type and EI when considering both gender and age. Data analysis suggested a significant relationship function between personality type and EI skills for Taiwanese faculty members. The current study, however, failed to indicate a significant relationship between gender and EI skills. When considering faculty member age, the current study also revealed a significant relationship between age and EI skills.

The current study provided valuable information that can help teachers and students establish EI learning goals and requirements, produce vision/scope in EI learning, and determine which personality type, or age group, is most appropriate for achieving academic excellence in Taiwanese colleges and universities. The current study also indicated a direction for developing EI skills for achieving gender equality in education. The higher EI skill performance of the elder faculty in Taiwan suggests that an excellent leader evolves with the accumulation of time, patience, and goal-based self-directed learning.
