This cross-sectional study proposed to investigate bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women participating in regular yoga practice. Thirty-one healthy postmenopausal women (age 58.1 +/- 4.7 yrs) practicing hatha yoga 2 or more hours per week for a minimum of 3 years were compared with 31 age-matched healthy postmenopausal women. The main outcome measures were anthropometrics and BMD of the lumbar spine, left and right hip, whole body, and non-dominant forearm. Significant differences between groups were found in body weight, fat mass (FM), and body mass index (BMI). After controlling for anthropometric measures, no significant differences were found in any BMD measures between groups. Further investigation through a controlled intervention of isolated yoga activity in a longitudinal study is needed to evaluate its practice effects on bone in postmenopausal women.
