Athletes begin to play a sport for the fun and enjoyment of the experience. As they evolve to college or elite levels, the joy may be forgotten. Sport psychologists have been studying the flow state of athletes for decades. Enjoyment leads to flow and can enhance performance, through natural means. The connection between sports and religion has been researched more often in the recent decade. This study attempted to look at the flow state and spirituality, and possible links between the two.

The purpose of the study was to enlighten athletes and coaches into the potential of sport psychology to enhance the enjoyment of the sport, and eventually performance. In times where winning at all cost is an obsession for most athletes and coaches, the flow state and spirituality are a sort of "back to the basics". Some coaches already take the time to take advantage of the positive benefits of sport psychology and spirituality for their athletes.

The instruments selected to collect the data were the Zone Test (ZT), and the Spirituality in Sport Test (SIST), with a slightly modified Likert scale, and a slightly modified demographic survey. The sample size included ninety-three participants from colleges in West Virginia and Kentucky who were involved in football, and men's and women's basketball.

The data received were analyzed using the Software Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 11.0 computer software package. Frequency and percentages were used to calculate demographic variables in order to understand personal characteristics of the participants.

Frequencies and means were calculated for each dimension and aspect in the flow state and spirituality tests. Demographic variables were used to analyze the results in the flow study and spirituality study for independent t-tests. The results revealed that student athletes all experience different dimensions of flow state during competition, with varying frequency. Student athletes also experience spirituality during competition with varying frequency. Correlations between the two tests did not reveal any significant results between the two surveys, but there were several strong correlations among the flow answers, and also among spirituality answers. This would indicate that student athletes do experience both flow, and spirituality but not necessarily together or one affecting the other.
