The Theory of the Evolving Psyche (Three Sphere Model) merges personality and evolutionary psychologies to explain why individuals engage in self-defeating behaviors when they know better. Sphere One behaviors involve the unconscious, instinct/impulse, emotion, and heuristics/defense mechanisms. Sphere Two involves conscious processes, restraint, and delay of instant gratification. Sphere Three provides behavior's underlying genetic component. The primary hypothesis: Until motives are fulfilled satisfactorily through Sphere One, attempts by Sphere Two to fulfill motives will be unsuccessful globally and longitudinally; although an individual knows better, Sphere One supersedes Sphere Two's global and long-term influence on behavior. Converging evidence provides support. Topics include self-regulation; self-control; regression; integration; self-esteem; authenticity; attachment; implications for psychotherapy and public policy.
