This is a study of select hymn tunes from Southern Harmony, a nineteenth-century American shape-note tune book. A brief history of the fasola shape-note tradition and shape-note tune books from the mid-1800s is presented. A discussion of the incorporation of shape-note hymn tunes into the compositions of major twentieth-century American composers documents the renaissance of these tunes. Furthermore, a historical link is identified between the tunes, as used in nineteenth-century tune books, and resulting choral arrangements written in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Following this historical overview, twenty Southern Harmony tunes are compared with twentieth-century choral arrangements based upon these tunes. Arrangements are discussed in terms of style, structure, tune, and performance practice. Comparison and contrast of select Southern Harmony tunes--versus current choral arrangements--may provide insight for choral conductors and performers when singing the tunes of Southern Harmony.
