520 $a The first chapter studies theoretically the effects on human capital and long run inequality of endogenous fertility, the phenomenon wherein higher wage parents have fewer children. In a model of human capital investment with credit constraints, skilled households have fewer children and invest more in their human capital, compared with unskilled households. Fertility differences then induce a downward demographic drift to the skill ratio in the economy. This causes the set of steady states that obtains with fixed fertility to shrink from a continuum to a finite set. Moreover, steady states must be characterized by upward mobility among the unskilled to counteract this demographic drift. This generates a novel theory of long run mobility not driven by any stochastic shocks or heterogeneity in abilities or tastes, but instead by endogenous fertility.
520 $a The second chapter examines empirically the impact of trade liberalization in agricultural products between Mexico and the U.S. due to NAFTA on the distribution of Mexican farm incomes during the 1990s. I find that NAFTA-induced tariff reductions decreased the border price of Mexican imports, notably corn, and increased the border prices of Mexican exports such as fruits and vegetables. Using farm level data, the chapter finds that the rise in fruit and vegetable prices benefited small farmers more than large farmers, while the drop in corn prices hurt large farmers more. Impacts on northern, central, and southern parts of Mexico are assessed separately. The results indicate that trade liberalization increased earnings of poor farmers relative to those of large farmers, particularly in the central region of Mexico.
520 $a The third chapter focuses on how trade liberalization affects agricultural employment and wages in Mexico. The effects of NAFTA-induced border price changes on employment and wages are assessed, using Mexican household level data. I find no effect of trade liberalization on wages of agricultural workers and a small impact on the composition of employment.
