The outlook of early Christianity was forever changed by the church's encounter with Marcion and the Gnostics. It is the Gnostics who prefigure the crisis of apostolic authority that overtakes the second century church. In the wake of the so-called "Gnostic Crisis," the church solidified into a more conservative and conventional institution. In that regard, Marcion and his contemporaries directly impact upon the ways in which the early church interprets the Apostle Paul. In spite of his importance to the canon of the New Testament, Paul's theology is all but absent from the writings of the apostolic period. For many modern scholars, that absence is owed to the Gnostics and their reverence for Paul's writings. That same reverence will later account for Paul's tumultuous entrance into the canon. Of all the Gnostics' opponents, it is Irenaeus of Lyons who is credited with rescuing Paul from the idle and wild speculations of the heretics. The schola of Christian interpretation he founded articulated a rationale for a Christian canon, as well as the church's doctrines of Apostolic Succession and the Rule of Truth. That portrait of earliest Christianity continues to impact upon the ways in which historians interpret the early church, particularly what is thought to be its heretical disinclination and dogmatic focus. That is to say, for many modern scholars the history of the early church is the same process of heretical devolution first identified in the Adversus haereses. This dissertation revisits that larger history by approaching the Apostle Paul through the lens of his second and third century interpreters. In that sense, it is an historiographical exploration, and not an overt work of biblical criticism. In reinterpreting the Paulinism of the early Fathers, we are able to approach the history of the early church as prima facie evidence for the study of the New Testament. In that space, we are then able to see how an apostle most perfect was made.Subjects--Topical Terms:
