The fist specimen was a prestressed precast 24" octagonal pile connected to a deck representing a tributary section of the wharf superstructure. The second specimen was a steel HP pile connected to a similar deck.

This report details the seismic behavior of full-scale pile-to-deck connections existing at the Port of Los Angeles.

The first specimen was designed to replicate a redundant lateral system existing at Berth 145 in the Port of Los Angeles. This redundant system's seismic behavior affects the details of the retrofit process, and it was hoped that demonstration of sufficient ductility would limit modification to the existing system. The load protocol for this test is based on the Port of Los Angeles' strain based limit states, Operational Level Earthquake (OLE) and Contingency Level Earthquake (CLE).

The second test was designed to replicate a steel pile and concrete deck gravity system, part of a landside retrofit to allow for the support of a crane rail at another berth, Berth 226, at the Port of Los Angeles. With a lateral system already present, these steel piles were only required to maintain their gravity load capacity after a seismic event.
