Thesis (M.Sc.)--University of Guelph (Canada), 2007.
Growing demand for organic products has resulted in establishment of grades and standards for the production and processing of organic foods. However, the presence of multiple standards has created confusion in the market place, especially for consumers. The situation is not different in Canada. Therefore, the Government of Canada is implementing a regulated national organic standard. However, little is known about consumer preferences for the attributes of different organic standards. This study evaluates Canadian consumers' preferences for attributes of different organic standards. After comparing 18 organic certification standards, four important standards viz., standards pertaining to pesticide-residue testing, product origin specifications, the standard setting agency, and standard monitoring agency are selected and evaluated for consumer preferences using a conjoint method. Respondents were recruited by a mall intercept method during October 2006 in the city of Guelph, Ontario. Results illustrate strengths and deficiencies of the proposed national organic standard in Canada.
