Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Albany, 2005.
To date, there have been no studies that have systematically investigated factors that may contribute to gamblers' gaming preferences. Consequently, the present study examined whether gender, coping style, and competitiveness differentially influenced type of preferred gambling modality (i.e., Action vs. Escape Games) in a sample of 168 community gamblers (88 males and 80 females). The study also investigated the influences of select gambling-related variables (i.e., severity, cognitions, dissociation during gambling) and personality factors (i.e., impulsivity, money attitudes) on gaming preferences. Logistic regression results revealed that gender, emotion-oriented coping, social diversion coping, and competitiveness were related to gaming preferences. Additionally, impulsivity, financial planning, and anxiety about money---but not the gambling-related variables---differentially influenced gamblers' preferred gambling modality. Implications for prevention and intervention are discussed.
