As a group, the women reported extended courses of treatment for infertility, averaging nearly five years with nine attempts assisted reproduction procedures per subject. The women were satisfied with the technical competency of their care, but expressed dissatisfaction with the relationship they had with their physicians, the amount of information they were given, and the amount of emotional support they received, particularly when negative treatment events occurred. This was true for both the women who had a child through treatment and those who did not.

Striking similarities appeared across the treatment narratives of all the women. Many struggled with infrequent and inadequate contact with their physician, which may have contributed to the extended length of time that they were in treatment. The women ceded an extraordinary amount of control to their physician, deferring to his or her recommendations in most circumstances where patients were required to make a decision. A notable exception to this pattern of deference was that in almost all cases, the women declined to use donor eggs, sperm or embryos even though the clinical staff strongly recommended it.

Subjects had a number of miscarriages and therapeutic abortions during treatment, events for which they had been inadequately prepared by the clinic. Most of the women experienced these pregnancy losses as major life events for which they continue to grieve years after treatment has ended. This was true whether or not the women eventually became parents through either birth or adoption. Subjects attributed a number of outcomes to their infertility treatment. These included disruptions to their relationships with spouses, family and friends, changes in their self-image, conflicts with their value system, and subsequent difficulties making the transition to parenthood.

From this data, a picture has emerged of the societal, personal and clinic-based pressures that are experienced by infertility patients as they attempt to determine the length and course of a reasonable treatment plan. Knowledge of these pressures will allow for a discussion of ways to improve the delivery of women's technologically advanced reproductive care and will help healthcare managers and clinicians set appropriate policy in this rapidly growing field.
